How to make lavender pillow spray

If you’re craving a good night's sleep, you’re probably prepared to do just about anything to ensure that it happens. There are plenty of gimmicks you can use but one of the simplest steps is to try a new pillow spray. Scientifically proven to help induce sleep in just a few minutes. The best part is that you can make your own in just a few minutes.

Why use lavender?

There have been many scientific studies around sleep. What type of sleep is the most beneficial? How many hours you should get? Even down to little details such as sounds and smells that can help you reach the highest quality of sleep.

Deep sleep is what our body craves the most. The more we get, the less time we need to spend actually sleeping. This is also known as REM or slow-wave sleep. Slow-wave sleep signifies that your brain waves have slowed enough to put your mind and body into a calming state where the heartbeat slows and muscles relax. Lavender is a scent known to trigger this type of sleep.

There’s a reason lavender is advertised in a lot of aromatherapy and sleep products. By having the scent around your bedroom you’ll help your brain to have a high quality night’s sleep. This is why it’s the perfect scent to use when making your own pillow spray.

Step by step process for making your own pillow spray

Depending on what type of trigger spray bottles you have will dictate the volume of each of these liquids. It’s important to note that no matter what bottle you use, it needs to be thoroughly cleaned out before you pour anything in. The last thing you want is an unknown chemical reaction.

Step 1

Grab your trigger spray bottle and pour in 70ml of distilled water. You can find distilled water in most supermarkets, usually in large quantities in the cleaning aisle. It may also be labelled as deionised water.

Step 2

Pour in 20ml of witch hazel. You may need to search online for this - depending on how lucrative your local supermarket is. Alternatively, 20ml of vodka will also do the trick. Far more accessible. However, be exact with your measurements, you don’t want to add too much of these liquids, they may be overpowering.

Step 3

Finally, add in your lavender essential oils. We recommend anywhere between 35-45 drops. The best way to do this is to buy the lavender oil in a droplet bottle rather than a pouring bottle. You’ll be surprised just how far one 10ml bottle can get you. If your local supermarket doesn’t have one, you can grab them from other online retailers.

Alternatives to making your own

It can be a bit fiddly. A lot of cleaning bottles have narrow necks, and the last thing you want to do is waste products by mis-pouring. We recommend investing in a funnel at the very least. However if all of that seems like too much effort, just to get a good night's sleep, you can purchase a lavender pillow spray from the Purdy & Figg store.
