Refillable cleaning products

 Refillable cleaning products

In this article, we tell you about refillable cleaning products.

If you’re looking to transform your lifestyle to a more sustainable and eco-friendly version, you might be overwhelmed with the options out there. In truth, there are multiple changes you can make, but to truly change your behaviour it’s baby steps.

We suggest the first area you consider is your cleaning cupboard. Not only are the products good for the environment, but they’re also not going to expire if you forget to use them, unlike some other zero-waste methods. It’s a quick fix, and easy to do. Just introduce your new products into your already existing routine,

Why you should use refillable cleaning products

If there’s one reason to use refillable cleaning products it’s to help the environment. But actually, the industry is vastly expanding. Due to their ease of use and increasing popularity, the time will soon come where there’s little need to buy anything but refillable cleaning products. Take a look at Purdy and Figg for example. Product ranges, scents and uses are all increasing at an exponential rate. This is partly due to the demand for supplies but also because fundamentally, refillable cleaning is the future.

But how have refillable cleaning products demanded such a trend? When you compare them with harsh chemicals and an expensive cost due to multiple products needed for one task, plus sub-par results, it’s pretty obvious. Regular cleaning products are demanding more money, for poorer results and they aren’t helping anybody live an eco-friendly lifestyle. It makes sense for selfish and selfless reasons.

Where to buy refillable cleaning products

Typically you would think with their popularity you could grab refillable cleaning products from anywhere. However, in supermarkets, money still seems to be the ruler of what is put on the shelves. That being said, some are slowly introducing them in pouches. In some cases, there are buyback schemes that are far more beneficial for the environment, but for now, as a first step, pouches are better than HDPE plastic bottles.

However, if you’re looking for refillable cleaning products that are truly beneficial to the environment, wide in variety and not too expensive, zero waste stores are a great start. These types of stores, while few and far between in some rural areas are increasing in popularity just like the products themselves. You can find a variety of different brands in these stores, test them and find which ones work for you. In some cases, you may even be able to go direct to the supplier and purchase the products from their store.

How to store these products

It’s important to note that refillable cleaning products can be just as harmful as the regular ones that your purchase in a bottle. No matter what the contents are, no matter what container you put them in it’s essential that you put them out of the reach of little hands.

We recommend that you purchase refillable glass bottles to store your cleaning products in. This way, you know that they’re safe. Also, they’re guaranteed to last longer than any flimsy plastic alternatives. Just thoroughly clean the glass bottles and then head to your nearest refill store.

How you can make some of your own cleaning products

While refillable cleaning products are available there are also natural ones out there that you can make yourself. Grab one of your new refillable glass bottles and get ready.

For an all-purpose cleaner, simply add 1/2 cup of white vinegar with 1/4 cup of baking soda to a 2-litre bottle of water. If your bottle is smaller than 2 litres, simply reduce the measurements accordingly. Alternatively, you can give some to a friend or relative for them to use in their home.

If you’re looking for a natural window cleaner, use one cup of distilled water, 2-3 tbsp of vinegar and 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol. Streak-free and made at home for a fraction of the cost.

Trouble removing a carpet stain? Mix 1/4 cup salt, borax and vinegar then rub it into the carpet. Wait a couple of hours for it to settle and then hoover it up. Stains will be gone! You can keep the dry ingredients in a storage pot and then just add the vinegar whenever the opportunity arises.

These ingredients and other pre-prepared solutions are usually at zero waste stores. We think it’s time everyone paid them a visit so they stop wasting money on overpriced chemicals.
