Eco tips for optimum wellness this summer

If you, like us, are clinging on to the last few weeks of summer then this blog post was written for you!

Whilst the shops are filling with autumnal clothes, we’re not quite ready to wave goodbye to summer. With the weather perking up again this week, we’ve rounded up some of our top summer wellness tips and brands we’re loving to help you lead a healthier, eco-conscious lifestyle!

Take care of your skin

Exposure to sunlight, swimming in the sea and other outdoor sports and activities can leave our skin and hands feeling dry and in need of some TLC. We try to use products that are nourishing to skin but also natural and not packed full of synthetic toxins. Nursem, founded by a fellow nurse, ticks all the boxes with their therapeutic products for hands and body. Use the code PURDYANDFIGG15 to shop 15% off their wonderful range of products.

Don’t forget SPF!

It goes without saying that we should all be wearing SPF suncream in the sunshine, however we’d recommend applying every day (even when cloudy). Even if the sky is covered with clouds, up to 80% of the UV radiation still reaches Earth, according to Suntribe. While there may be some clouds absorbing sunlight, light clouds may even enhance UV levels because of the scattering of sun rays and therefore increase the possibility of being harmed. We recommend Suntribe’s All Natural Mineral Day Cream SPF 20 for a lightweight, day-to-day face cream.

Eat local

Whether you’re hosting a barbecue or just planning your midweek lunch menu, in the summer heat lighter dishes are best. It’s also the time of year when lots of British grown produce is in season; meaning fresher and more nutritious fruit and vegetables. We’d recommend pairing some seasonal veg with some whole grains and nuts and a lean protein for a well-balanced meal.

Stay hydrated

It’s fairly common knowledge that the recommended daily intake of water is around 2 litres per day, but in the summer months it’s actually recommended to increase this to 2 and a half litres. Being hydrated will help you feel more energised and less sluggish, so it’s a win, win!

Aside from drinking plenty of water, there are certain foods that can help to boost your hydration levels, including:

  • Add cucumber to water for a fresh taste and extra hydration boost

  • Eat fruit & veggies with a high water content including citrus fruits and melon - you can freeze fruit to make them last longer and eat them as a refreshing snack!

  • Blend frozen fruit into a smoothie for a nutritious and hydrating treat

Simplify your routine

Whether you’ve got the kids at home or you’re enjoying a break from work, make sure you make time for yourself. We like to simplify our routine in summer and generally slow down a little. Counter Clean comes in handy when it comes to cutting down time spent cleaning, as it’s just one bottle that you can clean the whole house with - no more faffing around with hundreds of different products!
