It finally feels like Spring is here, and it's time to give your living room and other communal areas in your home a thorough cleaning. It's important to keep these areas tidy and organised, as they are often the places where we spend the most time with family and friends. Don't worry, though; with the right mindset and some helpful tips, it doesn't have to be a stressful chore. So, grab a cup of coffee, put on some good music, and let's get started!
1. Declutter First
Before you start cleaning, it's important to declutter. Go through all the items in the room and get rid of anything you no longer need or want. This will not only make cleaning easier, but it will also help you feel more organised and reduce clutter in your home.
2. Dust All Surfaces
Dust can accumulate quickly, especially in communal areas like the living room. One of our favourite tips for dust-busting is to line all high shelves with newspaper that you can replace every so often to avoid the tedious task of dusting! For picture frames and mirrors we like to use some double-sided tape to catch the dust!
For surfaces that have gathered lots of dust, use a microfibre cloth or duster to capture dust instead of just spreading it around - check out our dry-dusting hack below:

3. Tackle the Floors & Rearrange Furniture
Once you've dusted all the surfaces, it's time to tackle the floors. Depending on the type of flooring you have, you may need to vacuum or sweep. This is also the perfect opportunity to rearrange the furniture to give the room a fresh look & feel (and not to mention, making sure you collect all the dust and debris that can accumulate behind sofas!).
4. Clean Upholstered Furniture
Upholstered furniture can trap dirt and dust, so it's important to give them a good cleaning. Vacuum the entire surface of the furniture to remove any dust or debris before using our viral sofa-cleaning trick with a saucepan lid below:

5. Wipe Down Remote Controls
Our communal areas are often filled with electronics like TVs, gaming systems, and soundbars. Use a microfibre cloth to dust down larger electronics as they often gather dust without us realising. Then, use a spritz of Counter Clean to wipe down all of your remote controls and gaming controls, removing any dust and dirt. It's worth doing this every few weeks as many hands can lead to a build-up of dirt and germs!
6. Clean the Windows
Spring is the perfect time to clean your windows, letting in more natural light. Use a solution of white vinegar and water, or our trusty Counter Clean with a clean, dry microfibre cloth to clean your windows, removing any streaks or smudges.
7. Wash Cushions and Throws
Sofa cushions and throws can become musty and dirty over time, so it's important to wash them regularly. Check the care instructions and use a gentle cycle with mild detergent to wash them.
8. Add Some Greenery
Plants can help purify the air and add a touch of natural beauty to any room. Consider adding some plants to your communal areas to freshen up the space. Check out our tip here for a simply DIY plant food recipe:
