We are passionate about reducing, reusing and recycling here at Purdy & Figg in a bid to protect our environment. From reducing plastic waste and carbon emissions to using safe and gentle ingredients to protect our water sources, we’ve listed the many ways in which you can protect your environment when switching to natural, sustainable products.
Reduce plastic waste
Rather shockingly, only 9% of the plastic ever produced globally has actually been recycled (Greenpeace UK 2020). That’s why we use glass (which can be infinitely recycled) for our packaging, so all our products are either refillable or recyclable, significantly reducing the amount of waste produced.
Reduce carbon emissions
Traditional cleaning products are typically made up of 90-95% water, which not only requires additional (often plastic) packaging but also costs much more to ship around the country. By removing the water from cleaning products and using concentrated formulations we are also reducing the amount of carbon emissions and making use of the water that comes straight out of your tap!
Protect our water sources
Another lesser-known impact on our environment from traditional cleaning products is from the thousands of chemicals that end up in our water sources. Streams and rivers can end up being polluted as these chemicals can take a long time to degrade into harmless products (and some may never break down at all). We use 100% naturally-derived ingredients that are kind to the environment, helping to protect aquatic life and prevent these harmful toxic chemicals from entering the food chain.
Protect your septic tank
For older houses with a septic tank, you need to be careful about the types of cleaning products you use. Your septic tank turns your waste into sludge that can then be treated, however certain types of cleaners and chemicals (particularly harsh bleach and drain cleaners) can kill the bacteria and microorganisms that work to break down your waste, stopping the septic tank from working.
Sustainably-sourced ingredients
All our products are made using sustainably sourced ingredients, from our 100% organic pure essential oils to our naturally-derived surfactants. Often bulk cleaners will contain ingredients such as palm oil or essential oils that are sourced unsustainably. Deforestation caused by the $40 billion palm oil industry is driving wildlife into extinction, displacing indigeounous people and spewing carbon into the atmosphere.
