Oven Cleaning Hacks

Our top tips an cleaning hacks for your Oven

When it comes to cleaning tasks, your oven might be the one you rarely attempt. Not only does it tend to involve a lot of sitting around and waiting for cleaners to work, but it also requires a lot of elbow grease and scrubbing when the time comes.

Covered in grease, bits of food, and stains, there’s nothing we’d least rather do on the weekend. But alas, the time has come. So, we’ve investigated and research until we’ve managed to compile the best oven cleaning hacks out there and now we’re sharing them with you.

Using natural products to clean your oven

As lovers of natural cleaning products, this was the first method we tried, tested and approved. Using natural products that we regularly use for other cleaning hacks around the home reduces our waste. There’s no need for extra products or packaging. Natural products, less waste, and no more spending ridiculous money on oven cleaners - perfect.

Now, here’s how to tackle cleaning the oven with natural products.

Begin by emptying your oven, remove the racks and any other trays that might be inside. Mix half a cup of baking soda with some water. Only use a little bit, a few tablespoons to start with until the mixture forms a paste. When you have your paste, put on some gloves and spread the mixture all over the oven.

Make sure you avoid the heating elements when doing this but get into all the other corners. If there are any hard to reach places you can use an old toothbrush to help you. Here’s where the sitting around part comes in - you’ll need to wait 12 hours. So if this is your method of cleaning, be sure to leave plenty of time for the cleaning paste to work.

When the time is up, use a damp cloth to wipe away all the dirt. If you find that there are some areas where it is difficult to remove the paste, spray some white vinegar on it to soften the mixture. Keep repeating the process of wiping until your oven is spotless!

Removing the over door to reach in

Now, this oven cleaning trick may not work with every oven. Older models may not have this function but new and built-in ovens more than likely do. Check your manual if you still have it, or use trusty Google to see how to do it for your particular model. Often, oven doors can be removed.

Latches on the side of the oven can be released when the door is open so that you can remove them completely. No more struggling to reach in to clean, and it allows you to scrub at the door without the fear that the pressure might snap the hinges off!

The no-effort method

If you’re looking for minimum effort with your cleaning. Grab a couple of lemons, slice them up and squeeze their juice into a pan. Fill the rest of the pan with water. Make sure the pan you use doesn’t have a plastic handle as the next step is to turn the oven on until the water starts to boil. Leave it in there until the liquid has boiled away, the steam will clean the oven.

After the liquid has gone, turn the oven off and wait for it to cool. When it’s cool to the touch, grab a cloth and wipe away - perfect!

If like most people, cleaning the oven leaves you feeling a bit disgusting, grab some eco-friendly hand sanitiser from Purdy & Figg to clean yourself down afterwards. Cleaning your oven doesn’t have to take all day, and it doesn't have to require a lot of effort; there are always some cleaning hacks out there!
