Surviving Festivals Sustainably

by on June 28, 2024 09:57
Festivals wouldn’t be much without rolling fields, big skies, and the occasional torrential downpour to keep things well watered. It makes sense to show nature a bit of love in return, but thousands of people gathering in one spot can take its toll on our green and pleasant land. Thanks to clever innovation from brands and more awareness about our environmental impact, it’s easier than ever to survive festivals sustainably.

Here are our top tips for being a responsible reveller, without sacrificing any of the enjoyment.

Preparation is Key

Packing reusables and biodegradables is a great way to reduce your impact at a festival. Gone are the days of plastic bottles, disposable cutlery and fast fashion fancy dress. Instead, take a reusable water bottle, cups, straws, bags, cutlery and plates, biodegradable toiletries and second hand or homemade costumes. Start planning well in advance so you can get your hands on eco-friendly options and avoid buying things you already have. You’d be surprised how many everyday items can be fashioned into a cape.

Happy Campers

Old camping gear looking a bit worse for wear? Shake it out, hose it down, then give it a once over with some Counter Clean and one of our Summer Scents to leave it grime-free and fragrant. Hang it on a washing line or lay it on the ground to completely dry before packing it away again, ready for your adventure. There are lots of tent repair experts out there to help with wear and tear, too. Sites like Air Tasker are a good place to start, or get yourself a mini repair kit and have a go yourself.

If you’re buying camping equipment for the first time, look at second hand options or  sustainable brands like Kammok, NEMO, and Patagonia.

Getting There

Try to share a car, get a coach or catch the train to reduce your emissions, and plan ahead to avoid hours of traffic. ‘I spy’ wears a bit thin after a few rounds, and idling on congested roads produces a lot of pollution. If you have to fly, think about offsetting your emissions through a scheme like Offsetra.

Eating and Drinking

Bringing as much food as you can means less bought in disposable containers. Cool boxes like Igloo ECOCOOL are a great way to keep things fresh, and they even have a couple on wheels to make transportation a bit easier. BioLite make great eco-friendly, portable stoves for campsite cooking. That’s not to say you shouldn’t support the food and drinks stalls on site, especially small businesses selling local produce that hasn’t travelled too far. Veggie options are always a good choice for the planet, but late night burger cravings should always be satiated. It’s all about balance, after all.

Energy

Reduce the number of batteries you’re using by charging with solar power instead. Anker’s eco-friendly portable power station and solar panel are great for all your charging needs. Save energy and space in your luggage by lighting your way with a solar-powered lantern like this Crush Light.

Show the Land Some Love

You might be putting a (literal) stake in the ground, but festival goers are temporary guests on land that’s been around for centuries. Show it some love by sticking to paths, recycling your rubbish, and leaving no trace behind. Respect the culture and traditions of people local to the festival, too, be that staying well clear of sacred spots, letting loose discreetly, or drinking a lot of cider.

Festivals have been around for hundreds of years, and with a bit of care they’ll be around for hundreds more. Let loose, have fun, and take the chance to thank nature very much for having us.

P.S. wear sunscreen.
