Glassette’s Laura Jackson on the Happiness of Hosting

by on September 20, 2024 14:42

Earlier this month, we partnered with homeware brand Glassette and its co-founder, Laura Jackson, to launch our new look and limited edition autumn scents.

Here, the broadcaster and lover of all things food and hosting shares her tips for joyful, effortless entertaining.

Why Hosting is the Ultimate Joy

There’s something magical about having people over. The way your home transforms into a hub of laughter, conversation, and connection. Hosting isn't just about opening your doors. It’s about gathering friends, family, and sometimes strangers, and creating moments that matter. There's a special joy in seeing guests light up, in those shared looks over a shared dish, or the spontaneous laughter that fills the room - which is my favourite part of hosting.

Hosting is the ultimate act of generosity, but it gives back tenfold with memories, warmth, and a sense of togetherness that leaves everyone feeling a little bit brighter. We spend so much time not being present, but sitting around a table, phone free, enjoying people’s company and conversation - that’s what fills me up.

It’s a simple but clever mix of people + space + atmosphere = joy. Whether it’s a big celebration or an intimate dinner, hosting is your chance to create little moments of happiness for others, and for yourself. That feeling never gets old.

Laura’s top 5 hosting tips to wow your guests

  1. Set the mood with a signature theme
Every great event starts with a vibe. Pick a theme, be it tropical, Mexican feast, or classic dinner party, and let it guide everything from the tablescape to the music. A theme gives your event a cohesive flow and makes your space feel intentionally curated. Plus, it’s a fun conversation starter! Guests will love walking in and instantly feeling the atmosphere you’ve created.

  2. Curate the perfect playlist
Music sets the tone. Whether it's laid-back acoustic for brunch or something upbeat for a cocktail soirée, pick tunes that create the right energy. Pro tip: start the playlist low-key while people arrive and ramp it up as the night progresses. It’s all about matching the mood to the moment. And yes, you can sneak in some guilty-pleasure tracks that get people dancing! When I’m stuck for playlists I head to Spotify and tap in the mood I want to create; year, movie soundtrack or style of music – it can be a quick win as you hear the doorbell going!

  3. Mix casual with wow moments
Hosting is about balance. Make sure the overall vibe is relaxed and comfortable, and throw in a few ‘wow’ moments - an impressive signature cocktail, a show-stopping dish, a surprise dessert, or a personalised, handwritten menu. It doesn’t have to be complicated, but personalisation is key.

  4. Create cosy conversation spots
Not everyone wants to sit at a formal dining table all night. Mix up your seating areas with soft cushions, comfy chairs, and cosy nooks where guests can chat in smaller groups. This keeps the energy flowing and encourages everyone to mingle instead of getting stuck in one spot. I usually serve drinks and snacks on my kitchen counter before we sit for dinner and finish off with cheese in the living room.

  5. Be present, not perfect
This is the golden rule. Your guests are there for you, not perfection. To make things easier for yourself I always advise pre-making starter and pudding. For the main course, I’ll do a large salad and a carb dish in advance, so I only have to cook one element. This means less time in the kitchen and more time with guests. Sharing plates are also less fiddly, and mean people can help themselves. If you’re strapped for time and a guest offers to help, let them bring pudding!
