Back To: The Gym
The day has finally arrived -- as part of the second stage of lockdown easing, gyms, indoor swimming pools and other indoor exercise venues are finally reopening. Whilst social distancing and regular cleaning will be the norm at gyms across the country, there are little things each of us can do to help promote a safe workout environment. Whether you’re the first one queuing at the door or you’re a little more apprehensive about returning to the gym, we’ve compiled a list of top tips for your first few sessions back.
Stay protected -- Whilst hand sanitiser is now readily available at gyms across the country, often mass-produced hand gel can leave hands feeling dry or sticky. Don’t forget to pack your Purdy & Figg sanitising spray to clean your hands between equipment.
Ease yourself back in -- don’t expect to be hitting PB’s on your first session back. Over the last four months you’ve likely been solely using bodyweight with some light weights and running outside -- building up the weights slow and steady is key to avoiding injury. Try to avoid maxing yourself out in a two-hour session, your body won’t be thanking you tomorrow!
Be considerate -- social distancing is here to stay, so make sure you’re clued up on your gyms regulations -- some equipment may be time-restricted or laid out in a different way. Don’t forget to wipe down equipment after using it so it’s ready for the next person.
Be prepared -- another top tip is to arrive already in your kit and try to avoid using any communal changing rooms or shower facilities unless absolutely necessary, since space in these areas is usually limited.
- Hydration -- it’s important to stay hydrated during a workout. Dehydration can affect your energy levels and you won’t be able to work as hard if you haven’t drunk enough fluid. Make sure you take a refillable water bottle with you to keep topped up during your workout and for post-gym hydration. Our favourite brands are Chilly’s, Ocean Bottle and Dopper.
So whether you are rushing back to the gym today, or slowly preparing yourself, good luck, stay safe and most importantly, enjoy it!
