7 Natural Cleaning Tips You Need To Know This Summer

by on June 8, 2023 16:06

With summer just around the corner, it's time to enjoy the warm weather and the great outdoors. However, the season also brings its fair share of cleaning challenges. Whether it's your BBQ grill, patio doors, or garden furniture, maintaining a clean and fresh outdoor space is essential for a delightful summer experience. In this blog post, we'll share seven natural cleaning tips that will help you tackle these summer-related cleaning problems effectively, without relying on harsh chemicals.

Reviving your BBQ grill with bicarbonate of soda

After a long winter in storage, your BBQ grill could use a good cleaning to ensure it's ready for those backyard cookouts. Start by scrubbing the grates with a wire brush to remove any built-up grease and debris. For a natural cleaner, mix equal parts baking soda and water to form a paste. Apply this paste to the grates and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Then, scrub again and rinse with warm water. For stubborn grease stains, use a lemon half to scrub the grates before rinsing. Give the outside of your BBQ a freshen up with Counter Clean so it’ll look as good as new!

Refresh the patio with vinegar

Over time, the patio accumulates dirt, dust, and stains, diminishing its appeal. To restore its beauty naturally, begin by sweeping away loose debris. Then, mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water in a bucket. Dip a mop or scrub brush into the solution and scrub the patio thoroughly. For tough stains, sprinkle baking soda on the affected areas, spray vinegar over it, and let it fizz. Scrub gently, rinse with water, and allow the patio to dry.

Tips for cleaning patio doors

Patio doors often accumulate fingerprints, dirt, and smudges during summer months. To clean them effectively, use a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle (or your trusty Counter Clean, of course!), and wipe with a microfibre cloth or, better yet, use newspaper for a streak-free finish.

To clean the groves in the threshold that inevitably trap lots of dirt, cut some slits into a sponge so it slots inside the gaps to clean those hard-to-reach areas. Check out this demo on our TikTok here:

Rejuvenating Garden Furniture

To keep your garden furniture looking its best, start by removing any loose dirt or debris. For wooden furniture, create a solution using warm water and mild dish soap. Scrub gently with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly. For plastic or metal furniture, mix equal parts vinegar and water, and wipe down the surfaces using a sponge or cloth. Counter Clean can also be used on all types of outdoor furniture, whether your rattan set needs a good clean or your wooden picnic bench!

Banishing mould and mildew

Summer humidity can lead to the growth of mould and mildew on outdoor surfaces. To combat this issue, mix one part hydrogen peroxide with two parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the affected areas and let the solution sit for about 10 minutes. Then, scrub gently with a brush and rinse with water. For stubborn mould stains, make a paste with baking soda and water, apply it to the spots, scrub, and rinse thoroughly.

Freshening Up Outdoor Cushions

Outdoor cushions can become dirty and develop musty odours over time. Start by removing the covers if possible and shaking off loose debris. For removable covers, follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning. For non-removable cushions, use our trusty saucepan lid trick with a few sprays of a multi-surface natural cleaner.

Preventing Unwanted Pests

Summer also brings an influx of pesky insects. To keep them at bay without resorting to chemical repellents, try using natural remedies. Citronella candles, lavender plants, or essential oils such as peppermint, eucalyptus, or lemongrass can help repel mosquitoes and other insects. Additionally, keeping your outdoor areas clean and free of food scraps will discourage ants and other pests from invading your space. Keep your eyes peeled for an exciting new Counter Clean scent that can help with preventing unwanted pests later this summer…

With these natural cleaning tips, you can tackle common summer-related cleaning challenges while keeping your living spaces fresh and inviting. By opting for eco-friendly alternatives, you contribute to a healthier environment and enjoy a summer season that's both enjoyable and clean. So, roll up your sleeves, embrace the warm weather, and let your home shine naturally this summer!
