We see spring cleaning as an opportunity to reset - setting yourself up to be as efficient as possible (and to have an enjoyable time, too!). It is not always about having a big blitz. For us, it’s about creating some productive habits which are going to save us time and effort in the long run, like cleaning little and often.

James Clear, a habit change guru, has outlined key attributes to creating a long-lasting habit, including making it obvious, easy, attractive, and satisfying.

We wanted to put together some easy tips to help create new habits during your spring clean!

Kitchen & Utility

Making it Obvious

  • Invest in cleaning products that are visually appealing - by keeping them on the counter, you will be more likely to remember to clean regularly!

Making it Easy

  • Simplify your cleaning routine by consolidating duplicate products and getting rid of those you no longer use or like, including old cloths and dusters. Opt for refill packs and subscribe to your favourite products to make restocking easier and more sustainable.
  • Clear your worktops and find a home for everything, from bottles to seasonings and oils. This will make cleaning easier and more efficient.
  • Invest in high-quality kitchen accessories, such as sustainable sponges and cloths from Mr. Eco or Seep and Traidcraft rubber gloves.

Make it Attractive

  • Create a pleasant cleaning experience with products you enjoy using and that smell amazing - it really does make a difference! If you haven't already checked out our new spring scents - what are you waiting for!

Make it Satisfying

  • Your appliances are your best friends - so look after them! Regular descaling will help to reduce machine running costs and improve their lifespan. Tip: Pour 1 cup of white vinegar or soda crystals in your washing machine/dishwasher and run on a descale programme every 4-6 weeks.
  • There’s not many things more satisfying than a gleaming grease-free oven. Tip: Soak oven trays and grills in a solution of soda crystals and water (be careful to avoid the heating element and any aluminium trims!) For inside the oven, soak paper towels in the solution and stick to the walls. Leave for 1hr, then rinse.
  • Tip: Keep your top-quality kitchen textiles (cloths, tea towels, etc) looking as good as new by soaking them in a solution of Sodium Percarbonate at 40 degrees or using a good stain removal bar.

And for the bathroom, try these tips:

    Making it Obvious

    • Keep your cleaning products (like Bathroom Bliss!) in your shower to give it a quick wipe down every time you get out of the shower!

    Making it Easy

    • Do the same thing with your bathroom cleaning tools as with your kitchen; get rid of any old rags and cloths and consolidate products so you just keep things you use regularly.

    • Tip: for a sparkling clean toilet, mix a solution of 1/3 citric acid and 2/3 bicarbonate of soda in very hot water, then pour the solution into the toilet bowl and let it soak for an hour then scrub with a toilet brush. Watch and Charlotte demonstrates:

    Make it Attractive

    • Use seasonal scents to make cleaning more enjoyable and varied!

    • Tip: There’s nothing better than sparkling bathroom mirrors and shower screens. For the ultimate non-streaky cleaner, mix a 50/50 mixture of distilled water with P&F Counter Clean or Bathroom Bliss (at half strength) or some simple white vinegar!

    Make it Satisfying

    • There’s nothing worse than a trickling shower! Tip: Restore your shower to full power by regularly descaling the head with a solution of vinegar or citric acid and hot water. Let it soak for an hour before rinsing. Video tutorial here:
